Whether you live in "Tornado Alley" or not, spring brings to your state the increased possibility of a deadly tornado. Are you prepared? Education World helps you learn about the meteorological events that signal the possibility of a tornado and what safety measures you and your students can take to survive.
Tornado gives every time a deadly tornado strikes, it serves as a fresh reminder of the power of nature. It also serves as a reminder of the need for students everywhere to learn about tornadoes, their causes, and the safety precautions that might save lives.
WHAT IS A TORNADO?
The National Weather Service defines a tornado as "a violently rotating column of air pendant from a thunderstorm cloud and touching the ground." Each year, about 100,000 thunderstorms form over the United States. In an average year, between 600 and 1,000 of those thunderstorms generate tornadoes.
Although most U.S. tornadoes occur in only a handful of states, tornadoes can -- and do -- occur in every state. Every student in the country needs to be prepared to deal with the deadly storms. What do your students know about tornadoes? What do you know?
Do You Know That ...?
Tornadoes are the most destructive of all weather-related events.
On average, a tornado's path is 4 miles long and 400 yards wide but can be as long as 100 miles and as much as a mile wide.
Tornadoes can reach heights of 60,000 feet.
The average tornado travels at a speed of 25 to 40 mph., but tornadoes can reach speeds up to 70 mph.
Winds inside a tornado can swirl at close to 300 mph.
Tornadoes stay on the ground for an average of four to five minutes; however, a tornado can touch down several times.
Most tornadoes move from southwest to northeast.
Most tornadoes in the Northern Hemisphere rotate in a counter-clockwise direction. Most tornadoes in the Southern Hemisphere rotate in a clockwise direction.
Building damage during a tornado happens when high winds cause a buildup of pressure on building surfaces. This pressure is related to wind velocity squared.
Most tornadoes occur between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Tornadoes occur throughout the world; however, the greatest number of tornadoes and most intense tornadoes occur in the United States.
About 800 tornadoes touch down in the United States each year.
Half of all tornadoes occur during the spring months of April, May, and June.
Tornadoes can form in any state but they occur most frequently in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Texas.
Only 2 percent of tornadoes are considered violent, but those storms cause 70 percent of tornado-related deaths.
On average, 100 people are killed by tornadoes each year.
A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather alert radio receiver, equipped with a warning siren, can warn of an impending tornado when people are sleeping.
What more is there to know? The activities below will help your students explore weather, understand tornadoes and their power, and prepare them to act if a severe storm warning is issued for your area. Severe weather isn't any fun -- but these activities will be!

The Unforgetable Date - Narration Paragraph - Task 1 STBA
Last September 8th was my daughter’s birthday. That was the day which made me feel guilty because I really forgot about her birthday. Early in the morning, I went to my work place which is located not too far from my college, Buddhi University. I had plenty of works to do in the shop and the time went by so quickly that I wouldn't realize it if my assistant didn’t tell me that he wanted to go home. Afterward, I went to Buddhi University to get some English lectures and the lessons finished late, at about 9.00 pm. Having arrived home, I told my daughter that I was sorry since I forgot to buy her birthday present. My teardrops fell when my daughter replied that it was okay because she didn’t need anything for her birthday and she even asked me to save the money for her education later on. Thus, I promised to myself not to forget her birthday again and of course... the present.

Adjective and Adverb – Equative
• Adjective
Adjective is a word that names a quality and that used to define or to limit a noun in the sentence. Adjective must be followed by a noun to make a complete and clear meaning in the sentence.
Some example words of adjective : happy, sad, big, strong, small, short, tall, hot, cool, young, old, black, blue, thin, thick, beautiful, expensive, etc.
We can use Adjective equative to compare people, thing and places in the same way or in the different way.
The pattern is ...... as + adjective + as .......
Example sentences : Nancy is as tall as Tom.
She is not as strong as him.
The red flowers are as beautiful as the white ones.
A new car is not as expensive as an old one.
• Adverb
Adverb is a word that modifies verbs, adjectives and other adverbs.
Some example words of adverb : quietly, very fast, absolutely, quickly, safely, etc.
We can use Adverb equative to compare action (verb) in the same way or in the different way.
The pattern is ………….. as + adverb + as ……..
Example sentences : Tom drives a car as safely as his father does.
He doesn’t drive a car as very fast as a racer does.

Kevin, Catherine and I were making cookies this afternoon. Kevin kept wanting to stick his finger into the bowl to get a finger-full of dough. This scared me so I told him "Kevin, you must NEVER stick your hand in the bowl when it is attached to the mixer. It could tear your hand right off! Do you understand what I mean"?
Kevin: "Yeah... Then you couldn't count to five... Just one".

Airhead
Well, good thing I didn't have a blog resolution for 2011, because I would be failing miserably right now!
Actually, I probably wouldn't be writing now, either if it wasn't for a blank space in my memory. I came over here to see which airlines I've had issue with in the past. Oh, how I do love to write about airline ineptitude! You see, I'm going to New Orleans for Easter this year and none of my beloved smaller airlines fly into the Big Easy meaning I have to take a national carrier. Which would be fine except Delta's flight arrives at midnight! GAH! The next in line for me is American Airlines, but it doesn't seem that LA to NOLA is an AA route, leaving me with United. The problem with United is I can't seem to remember if I hate it! I had a rather awful experience a few years ago trying to fly into South Carolina, and I'll be damned if I can recall whether it was United or US Air. So, I came to my blog. Unfortunately, I didn't start posting on Blogger until 2008, and I think the South Carolina trip was in 2007. Which means that rampage post -- and it was a rampage -- was on my MySpace blog which I deleted along with my MySpace account. Ce la vie. What I did find, however, was a post in 2008 about my Christmas flight into Connecticut. That was US Air. Other than a couple of changes to flight times, I do remember it was an OK experience. So, I'm thinking it was United that gave me the repressed memory.
What have I learned from this? First, keep all blog posts no matter where they were initially written. And second, you will probably continue to hear about my flight issues as they arise because blogging about it will be the only way to keep my memories fresh, my rage in tact, and my vengeance engaged.

Blog ini Aktif Kembali
Aduuuh, blog ini sudah di anggurin selama 3 tahun...dan baru nge-cek comments banyak juga yang mampir kesini yah ternyata. Alhamdulillah. Kalau begitu mau melanjutkan lagi deh sharing yang ringan-rigan di seputaran cara-cara membuat blog gratis menggunakan Blogger.Com
Meski banyak yang sudah jagi-jago nge-blog, tapi saya yakin banyak juga yang bingung bagaimana caranya memulai untuk membuat blog yang sederhana dan menjadikan blog sebagai sarana latihan menulis dengan hati. Seperti yang saya lakukan melalui blog pribadi saya yang merekam kegiatan bisnis usaha muslim dan kerudung yang saya geluti 3 tahun terakhir ini.
Insya allah saya akan mulai menulis lagi disini. Demi memandu teman-teman yang ingin terjun juga kedunia per-blogger-an Indonesia he he.

Membuat Blog : Menambahkan gambar ke dalam artikel
Postingan ini melanjutkan hal-hal dasar yang perlu diperhatikan dalam membuat blog anda sendiri :-) seperti misalnya menambahkan gambar ke dalam artikel yang anda tulis atau membuat link URL.
Asumsinya, saat ini anda telah masuk untuk membuat artikel baru dengan menekan tombol "New Posts", akan tampil sebuah layout yang persis seperti kita menulis email dengan toolbar yang seperti gambar dibawah ini. Usahakan untuk familiar ya dengan tool-2 tersebut tapi kalau memang jago kode-2 pemprograman seperti html, silahkan saja langsung masuk ke menu html nya :-)

Langkah-langkah untuk menambahkan gambar di dalam postingan
Satu
Klik ikon yang berada disebelah kanan ikon berlabelkan ABC (lihat gambar diatas). Setelah itu akan muncul box seperti digambar ini.

Ada dua cara untuk menambahkan gambar yang anda simpan di komputer anda atau yang merefer ke gambar yang ada di website lain. Saat ini kita coba tambahkan gambar dari komputer kita dulu ya :-)
a. Klik tombol "Browse" untuk mencari file gambar yang mau diupload.
Note: Jika ingin menambahkan lebih dari satu gambar dalam satu kali proses upload ini, maka klik Link yang berwarna biru dengan label "Add Another Image". Dalam sekali proses maksimal hanya bisa hingga 5 gambar.
b. Pilih letak gambar (kiri, tengah atau di kanan) artikel
c. Pilih Size gambar (kecil, sedang, besar)
d. Tekan tombol "Upload Image"
Tiga
Tunggu sebentar, hingga muncul informasi bahwa semua gambar yang mau diupload telah sukses dan tekan tombol "Done" untuk menutup box tsbt.
Nah sekarang gambar yang ingin dimasukkan ke dalam artikel sudah muncul, silahkan lanjutkan menulis artikel dan jangan lupa untuk menekan tombol "Publish" ya, supaya tulisan/sharingnya jauhhhh lebih bermanfaat untuk orang lain :-)
Langkah-langkah untuk membuat link ke website lain
Nah, ada pertanyaan tambahan nih dari bunda dini untuk membuat link ke website orang lain dari postingan kita.
Misalnya nih, saya ingin jika tulisan doris nasution di klik akan membuka blognya doris nasution. Nah itu namanya menambahkan link URL kepada kata-kata doris nasution.
Caranya gampang banget koq, nih langkah-langkahnya:

Aku tarik napas dulu deh untuk ngejawabnya :-), niatku semoga apa yang aku jawab melalui email mbak ini bisa digunakan juga oleh teman-2 yang lain yang ingin juga bikin blog hingga nantinya bisa bikin web sendiri yang simple dan mengoptimalkan web tsbt untuk bisnisnya masing-2.
Sebagai langkah awal, saya lebih suka kita mulai dengan membuat blog dulu ya mbak khaira, karena sangat mudah dan yang terutama adalah GRATIS. Tidak usah pusing untuk membeli domain* dan hosting* di mana. Saya akan jelaskan lebih jauh di bawah nanti ya, kata-2 yang saya beri tanda * itu. Biar lebih jelas gitu loh :-)
Nah cara buat blog itu aku rangkum disini ya mbak, insyaAllah aku lanjutkan dengan cara buat website yang mudah nanti. Intinya kalau buat blog itu tidak offline loh, beda dengan buat website yang bisa offline dan tinggal upload saja file-2 yang kita inginkan muncul di web ke server paling tidak untuk proses pembuatan pertamanya.
Karena aku familiar dengan blogger.com, maka aku jelasin nya yang ini aja ya, sebenernya banyak koq yang nyedian blog gratis kaya multiply, wordpress, blogsome dll.

Di bagian bawah ada link yang berwarna orange berjudul "Create a blog in 3 steps", klik tanda panah nya yang berjudul "Create Your Blog Now" itu dan mbak akan dipandu untuk membuat blog.

Ikuti saja langkah-2nya ya. Dimulai dengan mengisi email address (rekomendasi saya pake google account ya mbak, hingga nanti kalau pingin naro iklan-2 adsense google di blog kita itu mudah diapprove sama si googlenya). Tapi kalau belum punya google main juga gpp kok, mulai saja dulu dengan yang ada, iya kan ? Kemudian masukkan password, display name (nama yang akan muncul dibawah artikel yang akan kita posting nantinya) dan jangan lupa tick "Acceptance of Terms" sebelum menekan tombol "Continue" yah.
EmpatNah disini kita mulai menamakan blog yang ingin dibuat.
Masukkan blog titlenya dan pilih namanya dan teruskan dengan menekan tombol "Continue".
Misalnya saya masukkan di blog titlenya (membuat blog gratis) dan di blog namenya (membuatbloggratis)
Lima
Pilih template (background blog, style font dan aturannya) dari template-2 yang telah disediakan untuk kita. Misalnya saya pilih yang pertama "Minima" (nanti jika mau diubah-2 warna background dll nya gampang banget koq mbak). Teruskan dengan menekan tombol "Continue" yah.
Enam
Jadi deh blog pertama kita, coba perhatikan kata-2 nya "Your blog has been created". Untuk melihat blog kita, maka kita harus posting dulu mbak, nah lanjutkan dengan menekan tombol "Start Posting" yah.
Tujuh
Akan muncul layout seperti kita menulis email ya mbak, silahkan masukkan judul dan tulisan yang mau dimasukkan di postingan pertama ini :-) coba untuk terbiasa dengan toolbar yang disediakan ya, misalnya untuk mengubah jenis font menjadi lebih besar, lebih tebal, mengganti warna font dan juga membuat link ke website lain (icon rantai disamping icon T) dan juga untuk menambahkan gambar (icon disamping icon ABC).
Delapan
Jika sudah selesai, tekan tombol "Publish" yah. Akan muncul kata-2 "Your blog published successfully". Klik link dibawah kata-2 tersebut ya "View blog in a new window" untuk melihat blog perdananya kita :-D Misal untuk contoh ini saya membuat blog www.membuatbloggratis.blogspot.com Nah muncul deh postingan saya yang pertama...hip hip horeee...jadi kan.
SembilanJika ingin posting lagi, dikemudian hari masuk aja ke blogger.com nya dan pilih "Sign in New Blogger", silahkan masukkan email address mbak di login name dan passwordnya, nanti mbak akan lihat list semua blog-2 yang dimiliki oleh mbak yang terdaftar dengan email address yang sama. Silahkan klik Posting ya untuk melakukan posting tulisan mbak ya (ikuti langkah Tujuh ya)
Nah silahkan dicoba dulu ya mbak khaira, saya mau mandi dulu, siap-2 ngantor hehe...insyaAllah nanti saya lanjutkan lagi di kantor yah.
